I first got into the wrestling business when I was introduced to Dean Harvey (a.k.a. B.A.D.) while hitting a routine workout at Gold's Gym in Pensacola, FL. Dean had been trained by the Samoans and actually wrestled quite a few dark matches with the WWE, as well as working for Jerry Lawler in Memphis, TN. A couple of months later, I began training at his home just north of my home town. It was to say the least, a very "down home" atmosphere. But, I loved it. It was just bare bones and rugged as could be.
I trained for nearly 6 months, learning how to give and absorb an enormous amount of punishment. I began wrestling about once a week for various promotions along the panhandle of Florida and south Alabama. I was later introduced and booked in a match with John Saxon, the NWA Battlezone Heavyweight Champ and 1/2 of the NWA Southern Tag Team Champions (with Kevin Northcutt ). I have to tip my hat to this man for taking a chance on me. I must admit that I learned more from him than any other wrestler in this business. We fought eachother up and down the coast --- from Jackson, Mississippi all the way back to Milton, FL. There was lots of wrestling...lots of chops...and lots of learning.
During my time in the ring, I was fortunate enough to be booked on cards with such names as Rick Steiner, Billy Gunn, Raven, Buff Bagwell, Norman Smiley, Malice (recently deceased), Sonni Siaki, Elix Skipper, Kevin Northcutt, David Young, Cassidey Riley, and last but not least, the Armstrongs. All of that was great...but honestly, nothing can compare to what happened on Sunday, August 14, 2005. You see, this was the day that I gave my life to Jesus Christ...and accepted Him as my personal Lord and Savior. Since then, I have not stepped foot into any wrestling ring.
It's not because I don't like it anymore --- it'll always be in my blood. I just don't care for what wrestling has become. There's too much profanity, too much sex, and too many workers on the indy level who think they're superstars. Instead of worrying about selling their own t-shirts and videos, they should take the money they're spending on that and buy a gym membership. These guys need a serious reality check. I love the physicality of pro wrestling, but it's just a little too "fake" for me sometimes (yes I said that). I think I've gained a reputation for being a little too rough in the ring --- or at least that's what I've been told. I guess being a rugby player didn't make it any better. Who knows. Will I get in the ring again? Honestly at this point I don't know --- and frankly I don't think anybody else really cares. I guess we'll just have to see, won't we? Until next time, take care and God Bless.
